I saw very subtle effects of structural ice when it was at 3%, a slight increase in angle of attack. I don't think I got any structural ice at all that time but my RPMs were dropping before I turned on carb heat. After that I turned pitot heat off to get an early warning of ice. I had pitot heat on so I didn't realize icing conditions were that bad. The most dramatic effect is in freezing rain where you can build up enough ice to be unable to fly in about 10 minutes, and the rate it accumulates varies.Ī recent flight in -2 C weather had carb ice flying through a cloud layer. When you leave the clouds the ice usually dissipates slowly, but not always. You can get some structural icing in clouds if conditions are right but you'd have to stay in clouds continuously for a while before you'd even notice the effects. I remember reading that and trying his gauge long ago.
There is a program to delete saved data in the ASN folder, but I'd have to check the manual to see if there might be any problems with an uninstall. Even then you could restore the textures manually. I recall that it kept backups of all your original textures and as long as you restored them before you uninstalled Active Sky there shouldn't have been any problems. It may have been a separate program for Active Sky at the time, but I don't remember buying it separately. In practice the stuff you use constantly is pretty straightforward.Īt one time I had sets of replacement graphics for various textures, but I don't seem to have that currently with ASN. There are a lot of options you can set even if the interface for them is a bit clunky. Lately I've been using the XGauge 2D panel a lot to get a weather gauge right inside the aircraft.
The weather report from the map was detailed and useful. I also liked that you could tune 122.0 and get the closest automated weather report. It has gone through many changes since then. What sold me on Active Sky was the weather map, which I really liked. I first bought Active Sky back when the Jeppesen weather was still working. If you are still using Active Sky Next, what do you think of it after using it for a while longer? I fear I won't be able to clear its residuals if I ever switch to another weather engine.
I must add, AS heavily incorporates itself within the sim. I'd prefer simplier but robust interface - FSRealWX wins in it. AS interface is confusing sometimes, it's too shiny for the back-end simulation utility, and lots of various controls are placed within different tabs. I've tested the same non-rated aircrafts with Active Sky with same conditions as before, and when I would've gotten into emergency situation, the flight with Active Sky was just a leisure trip (and that is after I switched AS to "realism" mode).Īlso I like FSRealWX interface better. I liked the graphics and (apart from thunderstorms) I find the two programs very much alike - but it seems Active Sky is way easier on the handling that FSRealWX. What I experienced wasn't even nearly hardcore as it was with FSRealWX.
That means I won't file in a refund even while the experience was somewhat lacking (primarily it's the matter of the price and not knowing what exact options will remain after FSRealWX trial ends). OK I've got Active Sky and I might consider having it - after 20-days trial for FSRealWX ends.
